Nasarawa State
The public complaints commission has been rightly described as a credible avenue where the ‘’little man’’ in the society who could not go to court would seek redress on whatever grievances he or she might have concerning any administrative injustice against any government or private enterprise and its officials.
The commission came into existence following the chief UdoJi panel which recommended the establishment of the public complaints commission also known as the Ombudsman which was given legal authority in 1975 and later became CAP.P.37 laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
However, the Nasarawa state office was established in 1997 following the creation of the state in 1996. The first Hon. Commissioner of the state was Mr. James Akabe (KSM) whose tenure ended in 1999. Thereafter, the commission was left without a commissioner till the year 2012 when Alhaji Usman Dubagari resumed the leadership till April, 2018.
The National Assembly on May, 28th 2018 inaugurated a new crop of Hon. Commissioners for the 36 state offices and the FCT. This singular act ushered in Barr. Philip John Iyakwari as the third Hon. Commissioner of the Nasarawa state office.
Nasarawa state presently has twelve Area offices spread across twelve (12) out of thirteen (13) local Government Areas of the state. There is a staff strength of 83 officers.
As a gate way to administrative and social justice at no cost to either the complainant or respondent, we encourage:
- Discipline among staff handling investigation of cases
- Being sensitive to the needs of our complainants for dispensation of justice.
- Capacity building of staff at the state level for more efficiency.
Finally, the commission since inception in Nasarawa state received and registered 3005 complaints out of which 2182 have been satisfactorily disposed off leaving a total of 823 cases pending as at Feb. 2019.
