In a jaw-dropping turn of events, the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) Osun State has successfully resolved a long-standing, intractable conflict between the Nigerian Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED) and the Independent Patent Medicine Dealers Association (IPMDA). This dispute had defied resolution for three years, despite attempts at mediation in the king’s palace and police stations.
The PCC, a champion of social justice and ombudsman against administrative injustice, stepped in to address the long-standing issues, acting on a complaint from IPMDA, intervened to address allegations of intimidation and restriction of members’ freedom to operate. The commission convened a tripartite meeting with the regulatory body, Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), and the State Ministry of Health, to clarify the roles and recognition of both associations.
Through the PCC’s mediation with the use of Alternatives Dispute Resolution Mechanism, the associations were educated on the fundamental right to freedom of association and the need for peaceful coexistence. Yesterday, at the PCC office, the two associations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), effectively ending the long-standing feud. The atmosphere was filled with joy and laughter as members of both associations embraced each other, marking a new era of harmony.
Mr. Mewase Vincent, Director of Investigation at PCC Osun State, warmly welcomed representatives from the Pharmacy Council and Ministry of Health, setting the tone for a constructive dialogue. The PCC’s intervention demonstrated its unwavering commitment to social justice, resolving a dispute that had vexed the community for far too long.
Pharmacist Atere, head of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), appreciated the Commission for this giant stride and emphasized the crucial importance of proper licensing and regulatory approval. “No member of either association should operate without a license,” he stressed, warning against indiscriminate shop openings without PCN approval.
This success showcases the PCC’s commitment to social justice and its dedication to resolving disputes, promoting understanding, and fostering peaceful coexistence among various groups in Osun State.
